had sucsessfully removed army officials sucha s lambert and monck had become commander in chief
parliament was now re-established as parliament and government- and was backed by monck (teh most powrful general in the land)
mistakes of the rump
- wanted to settle old scores and undertook a purge of teh army, removing half of the serving officers
- this damaged teh intergirty of the rump and peopel were unwilling to pay parliamentary taxes
- they also mistreated monck, who has saved them, and wanted to reduce his poltical power - condeming him to just police london
- however, he did police london but refused to withdraw from politics
- he also ensured that those who were barred during the prides pruge of 1648 would be reinstated
effects of the retruning members of teh prides purge
- altered poltical balance, tilting the scales against republicansim
- made it more liekly that there would be a reisntated struart monarchy - theirlink witht he old consitution was clear
- parliament soon excluded commited republicans, including lambert
Monck and the royal restoration
he avoided pressing the matter too early and presneted himself as moderate.

appointed by the long parliament, a royalist sympathiser and commander fo teh fleet
this meant that the two leading military commanders, now favoured charles II’s return

he attempted to make on final attempt t preventing royalsist uprising, with force
soem regiments agreed but most of teh army didnt want to challenge monck
mabert was defeated at edge hill and captured
the convention parliament

a free election showed that suport for teh commonwealth was reducing and royalists symoathies increased
decleartion of breda
decleration of breda formed , charles promising general parden and religious toleration aswell as parliaments right to decid and dispute questions of propery entitlements and teh armys pay
the reisntated stuart monarchy
both houses accepted the decleartion as the conitutional basis for the monarchy
in may 1660, engalnd was no longer a republic and the monarchy was reinstates
Charles was crowned on 29th may
the restoartion settlement
followed chalres’ acsession and attempted to obliterate all taht had happened since 1649
