4 - James and religion Flashcards
James’ early tolerance to catholics
called for a reduction in resusancy fines and they fell to less than 1/4 of what they were before 1603.
this did not last long and fines were ordered to be paid in full and priests were ordered out of the land in 1604
Reason for the increase in persecution in 1604 against catholics
The protestant Parliament did no like his leniency to catholics, and wanting to avoid antagonizing them, in hope of them making concessions over the union of scotaldn and engalnd
Events of the gunpowder plot
november 5 1605
peace with spain removed any hope of foreign intervention, so a plot formed to remove the king and parliament all together
Led by robert catesby, the plan was to gig under parliament and set off an explosion to kill the king/ MPs
Plan was discovered when a member sent a letter to a relative disclosing the details
Reprecutions of the gunpowder plot
resusancy fines increased
Catholics not allowed to live in or near london
not allowed to hold public office (penal laws)
also required to take an the popes authority to depose kings
Later fears over the crowns commitment to protestantism
Attempt to secure a spanish bride for charles
failure to support the protestant cause on the continent
relaxation of resuancy laws in negotiations with spain
Reasons for the hampton court conference
The millenary report - asking for moderate puritan reforms
Many puritans wanted reforms to cleanse the church of popery
theconference was for bishops and puritans to debate the issues of the report, including clregymen being forced to hold more than one position in order to survive, due to poor income from the parish
The hampton court conference
1604
formal debate between bishops and a few moderate puritans
King james bible established
Failures of the puritans in Hampton court
didn’t want to seem as extremist and ask for the removal of bishops so demanded not having to wear surplice, the white robe, but james saw this as trivial
wanted to impress the king with their following and petitioning campaign but the king saw this an undue pressure
Puritans
wanted to purify the church of any last remaining popery
wanted an end to rings in marriage, bowing to the name of jesus and wearing robes ect
Outcomes of the Hampton court conference
Puritans werent granted any changes to the church organisation
Was an agreement over the poverty of the church, which parliament were unwilling to act because its members often benefited
James now was suspicious of teh puritans
Arminians
believed in predestination
believed in more ceremonial services and placed stress on the sacraments
they regarded the catholic church as the true church
also put a great value on the crown
James and the arminians
was at first opposed to arminianism
later became sympathetic as -
they upheld royal authority and didnt share the irrational hatred of popery
he, naturally promoted them
Religion in soctland
Wanted to align the scottish church with the english
was able to win over nobility
bishops imposed in scotland in 1618
Presbyterian structure still remained
didnt want religious conflict
Articles of perth
reforms pushed through the general assembly by james
took a more catholic approach to communion and was VERY unpopular - included kneeling to receive communion
james knew he had gone too far and didn’t strictly enforce them
Religion in ireland
Three main religious groups -
catholic majority
church of england
newly entering, presbyterians
james, wisely, didnt undertake the task of demanding uniformity throughout his territories
