A way of ommons expressing their feelings without being conforntational
in 1604 they wrote about the ‘growing’ royal perogative
The second session OF 1605
Due to meet on the day of the gun powder plot but was obvioulsy adjurned
Less worried about james’ extravegance and james was given £400,000 subsidy - a way of showing how glad they were that the plan failed
The end of the 1st parliament
Ended due to distrust between commons and crown
Mps suspsected the corwn of sinister inettnions - and uncooperative
Addled parliament of 1614
James called a parliament without an actual agenda - just yurned to a discussion about impositions.
when one MP suggestes gentlemen of the bedchamber be sent home, james dissolved the parliament

married to Frances howard, member of the powerful, howard family (who were pro-spanish)
anti-spanish factions wanted to get Carr away so introduced Buckingham instead
The overbury affair
Thomas overbury was a freind of carr but didnt like the marriage to a Howard
the countess arranged to have him posisioned
Her and her husband, Robert carr were found guilty of murder
Later pardoned but his time as favourite was over
The fall of the Howards
The overburry scandal and dismissal of Suffolk lead to a fall in their power
Buckingham
Fall of the howards left a power vacume
Limited influence in James’ reign
By 1625 he had a monpoloy of patronage, causing issues for charles’ relations with parliament
1st session of Parliament of 1621
Country in a depression
commons could only grant a subsidy of £140,000
James and commons both agreed that monpoloies were harmufl and caused inflation
a bill to stop monpoloies failed as the lords rejected it
2nd session of parliament in 1621
The issue of the palitinate and securing it
Parliamenbt wanted james to head the protestant cause
also wanted a marriage for charles within the religion

commons wrote negatuvely about james’ actions on foreign policy in their jorunal
he absolved dissolved when james found out
a subsidy bill was passed but no legislation
Parliament of 1624
buckingham adn charles had returned from madrid wanting war, only james and some council stood in the way, pressure from parliament would overrule this
Reasons for the subsidy act, the statue of monpoloies and impeachment of cranifeild
desperation for parliaments support of a war with spain meant charles was willing to accpet them
