parliament now consisted of only 211 members in commons when there used to be 470
commons want a united front and only 70 of them had been involved in the kings trial
the power of the army
following the prides purge, parliament was reliant on the army for support
cromwells position
at this stage had had no formal position, even if he was a powerful figure
he was technically suboridnate to fairfax but after fairafx removed himself from public affairs - cromwell became more powerful
Establishing the republic
between feb andmarch 1649 the rump passed the following measures
- aboliton of the monarchy
- abolition of the house of lords
- creation of the council of state to act as government
- the decleartion that england was now a commonwelath
inention of the rump in creating a republic
not to underine the consitution and create a revolution
they were attempting to preserve the cosnitution and prevent royal opression
the first council of state
composed of 41 memvers
34 were mps
key figures such as henry ireton were prevented from entering the council
