however, in discussions with lamber he stated taht he keenly supported the new consitution - as long as he wasnt made king
cromwell becomes protector
he disctanced himself from the overthrown mnarchy, in the cermony to become protector he wanted to wear a simple black coat
cromwells ordinance
in the 9 months before his first parliament, cromwell worked with the council of state to come up with the main ordinances he wanted ratified
1 - financial reform two main types of tax ‘assesment’ and ‘excise’
2 - religious reorganisation
3 - legal and admin refroms that were proposed by the rump
reaction to the protecorate
many questioned the legitimacy of the instrument of government
was made by the council of officers, which had never had public support
a government system impose by the military
the mps of the first protectorate parliament
the elections eld befiore the 1654 parliament didnt yield a house submissive to the amry or cromwell - inclduing presbyterians and republicans
priority of the 1st parliament
not to reform, but to attack teh instrument
also objected to the high costs of maintaining the standing army and demabnded it be reduced
the oath of loyalty
as parliament voiced its concerns, cromwell attempted to supress oposition by making mps swear an oath of loyalty to him.

parliament introduced a new bill to restrict cromwells power - undrmining the instrument
dissolution of the 1st parliament
after parliament passe the bill to limit his power, it was teh final straw and he disolved parliament after 5 months
