A
- Distributing attention between siblings and neonate can be difficult, especially if the newborn is pre-term or needs special needs
- Positive sibling adaptation includes interest and concern for the baby and increased independence
- Negative behaviors include regression in toileting and sleep habits as well as aggression towards the baby

A
- Parents attitudes towards baby arrival sets the stage for children reactions
- There will often be jealousy and sibling rivalry
- Parents must manage guilt of depriving older siblings of attention and monitor behavior of older siblings towards the infant (divert aggressive behavior)

- Depends on the information given to the child before the baby is born
- Also depends on children’s cognitive and developmental levels

Sibling Acceptance
A
- Take older child on tour of hospital room and point out similarities between this birth and their birth.
“This is like the room I was with you and the baby is in the same bassinet” - Have a small gift from the baby to the older child
- Give the sibling a t-shirt that says I’m an older brother/sister
- Let your children be one of the first to see the new baby
- When older child visits for the first time, do not hold the baby, arms should be available for the older child.
- Plan time with both children (switch off between mom and dad)
- Give siblings a picture of the baby to show off at school
- Give older siblings responsibilities if they enjoy it such as giving the baby a bottle
