Renal Function
A
- High steroid levels increase renal function during pregnancy
- Reduced steroid levels decrease renal function after birth
- Renal function returns to normal after 8 weeks
- Pregnancy induced glycosuria decreases in a week
- Lactosuria normal in lactating patients
- Creatinine normal in 6 weeks
- Ketonuria normal or after prolonged labor with dehydration

Fluid Loss
A
- Diuresis caused by lowered estrogen removes excess fluid retained during pregnancy
- 3000mL+ urine output during first 1-3 days

Urethra/Bladder
A
- Birth trauma, increased bladder capacity after birth, and anesthesia decrease urge to void
- Pelvic soreness also decreases need to void
- Decreased voiding and diuresis cause bladder distension
- Excessive bleeding can result from distended bladder and is also susceptible to infection
- Bladder tone restored in 5-7 days
- Stress incontinence is likely to happen after vaginal birth caused by trauma to pelvic floor
