A
  • High steroid levels increase renal function during pregnancy
  • Reduced steroid levels decrease renal function after birth
  • Renal function returns to normal after 8 weeks
  • Pregnancy induced glycosuria decreases in a week
  • Lactosuria normal in lactating patients
  • Creatinine normal in 6 weeks
  • Ketonuria normal or after prolonged labor with dehydration

Fluid Loss

A
  • Diuresis caused by lowered estrogen removes excess fluid retained during pregnancy
  • 3000mL+ urine output during first 1-3 days

Urethra/Bladder

A
  • Birth trauma, increased bladder capacity after birth, and anesthesia decrease urge to void
  • Pelvic soreness also decreases need to void
  • Decreased voiding and diuresis cause bladder distension
  • Excessive bleeding can result from distended bladder and is also susceptible to infection
  • Bladder tone restored in 5-7 days
  • Stress incontinence is likely to happen after vaginal birth caused by trauma to pelvic floor
