6.1 - PEAT Exam 2 (Section 1) Flashcards
What body part should assessment of posture in a wheelchair begin with?
Pelvis
Describe rhythmic initiation (PNF)
Therapist passively moves the individual through the desired motion several times
Allows patients to become familiar with and learn the movement
Describe the MOA of ACE inhibitors
Inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme
- ACE converts Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II
- Angiotensin II causes vasoconstriction and increases sympathetic input
- Decreasing angiotensin II also increase Na+ excretion by kidneys –> reduces blood volume
Outcome:
- Reduce peripheral vascular resistance (vasodilation)
- Increase venous capacitance
Venous capacitance - amount of blood in a vein at a specific pressure
Which of the following conditions is a CONTRAINDIATION for mechanical traction of the cervical spine?
Muscle spasm
Hypomobility of the spine
Decreased UE sensation
RA
RA
Cervical traction may benefit UE sensation impairments by reducing pressure on nerve fibers
A patient exhibiting pronation of the feet is likely to demonstrate what impairments during a squat?
Medial (internal) rotation of the tibia & resulting genu valgus
When is a child indicated for a TLO for scoliosis?
Curvature of 25-45 deg
Until the child is of sufficient age to have a spinal fusion performed (10+ years of age)
What “tight” muscles are often involved in thoracic outlet syndrome?
Anterior scalene
Pec minor
Is Raynaud disease a precaution or contraindication for iontophoresis?
NO
Is peripheral neuropathy a precaution or contraindication for iontophoresis?
Precaution (decreased sensation)
While walking on a treadmill during Phase II cardiac rehab following CABG, a patient reports a new onset of chest pain and dyspnea. What should the PT instruct the patient to do?
Cease walking with the therapist reassesses the patient’s vital signs
An episode of stable angina is an indication to terminate exercise testing and reassess vital signs
These symptoms do not constitute a medical emergency. PT should reassess vitals and ask the patient to take ntg, if prescribed
What are vocational rehab services?
Helps people w/ disabilities find and keep a job
Describe the presentation of a PVC on an EKG
“Wide & bizzare”
Wide QRS complex
Absent P wave
What findings would indicate the presence of a Stage 1 pressure injury on a patient w/ darkly pigmented skin?
Intact area of skin that is warm & purple
Stage 1 Pressure Injury:
- Intact skin
- Warmth
- Color change (may look purple rather than red in people w/ darkly pigmented skin)
An intact blister w/ a boggy feel is characteristics of a deep tissue injury
Describe the clinical presentation of dermatitis
- Itching
- Tenderness to touch
- Inflammation
- Presence of vesicles and crusting
- Either unilateral or BIL distribution
- LACK of fever
- NORMAL temperature of the LEs
What is atrophie blanche?
Describe a pattern of scarring that occurs after an ulcer heals
