5.2 - PEAT Exam 1 (Section 2) Flashcards
Week 5, Monday - Tuesday
Describe the superficial abdominal reflex
Neurological reflex that causes the umbilicus to move towards the area of the abdomen that is stroked
What is myositis ossificans?
Clinical presentation
Heterotopic bone formation within the muscle
Clinical Presentation:
- More common following a traumatic event (ex: quadriceps contusion)
- Painful, tender mass
- Progressive loss of ROM
Which nerve is affected with pronator teres syndrome?
Median Nerve
Describe the Hoehn and Yahr Classification of Disability
Used for individuals w/ Parkinson disease
Stage 1: Unilateral involvement only
Stage 2: BIL symptoms; no impairment of balance
Stage 3: Mild to moderate disease; physically independent
Stage 4: Severe disability; still able to walk or stand unassisted
Stage 5: wheelchair-bound or bedridden unless assisted
To determine if a 4 yo child has age-appropriate gross motor skills, what should the therapist’s assessment include?
Kicking a rolling ball
Catching a small ball
Hopping on one foot
What movements should be avoided in those with a history of vertebral osteoporosis or previous history of vertebral fractures?
Movements with spinal flexion, side bending, or spinal rotation
What is a common complication in patients who have an acute cervical SCI?
Describe the clinical presentation
Orthostatic hypotension
When in a vertical position…
Dizziness
Light-headedness
Ringing in the ears
What is the most important factor to determine prognosis for a patient w/ ALS?
Bulbar and respiratory weakness
- “Difficulty swallowing”
- “Breathing difficulties”
Deviation of the jaw during opening is associated with what mobility restrictions?
Hypomobility toward the TMJ deviation
Hypermobility contrallaterally
Example: L deviation at the end of the available range of mouth opening –>
- L TMJ hypomobility
- R TMJ hypermobility
Describe an indication of severe dehydration in a 6-month old infant
Sunken fontanelle
Fontanelle - “soft spots” on a baby’s head
- Space between bones of the skull where ossification & sutures will form
When teaching a care provider how to perform a bed-to-wheelchair transfer, should the therapist have the care provider practice transferring the therapist or the patient?
The patient
Transfer skills are specific to the individual being transferred
Important that practice with the patient take place
Should a compression bandage be applied if the patient has impaired sensation?
No
How should heart rates faster than 100 bpm or slower than 60 bpm be measured?
For the full minute
Describe the appropriate procedure for measuring a wound that has well-defined margins
- Place a nonsterile ruler close (but not ON) to the wound to obtain measurements
- Discard the ruler after use
What is the MAX current density that should be used to initiate iontophoresis when the current amplitude is 10 milliamperes and the conductive surface area is 20 cm2?
.5 milliamperes / cm2
Current density = current amplitude / conductive surface area
10/20=0.5
