4.3 - PT Final Exam 1 Review (Section 3) Flashcards
Week 4, Wednesday
Describe the innervation of the deep peroneal nerve
Motor: Anterior compartment - TA, EHL, EDL
Sensory: space between base of 1st & 2nd digits
What chest x-ray findings are likely to be present in an individual w/ GBS that has developed atelectasis due to restricted mobility?
Increased density w/ a shift of the trachea toward the affected lung
Which muscle is MOST important to protect during the first 6 weeks following a TSA?
Subscapularis
Why is a joint replacement contraindicated in neuropathic arthropathy?
Poor rate of healing & risk of complications
Describe the presentation of GBS vs myasthenia gravis
GBS
- Distal to proximal muscle weakness
- Weakness of extremities
- Absent DTRs
- Sensory disturbances
- Rapid progression of symptoms
Myasthenia Gravis
- Proximal to distal muscle weakness
- Gradually progressing
- NO sensory changes
- Cranial nerves often affected first - eye muscle weakness, ptosis (eyelid drooping), difficulty chewing, fatigue of muscles of facial expression
Can myasthenia gravis be exacerbated by pregnancy?
Yes
What medication is often administered for myasthenia gravis?
Aricept (Donepezil)
- Inhibits the enzyme responsible for destruction of Ach
Prednisone
- Helps reduce inflammation
Why should patients w/ lymphedema avoid hot baths and saunas?
Will increase the body’s temperature and may result in additional lymph fluid accumulation
Should patients with lymphedema wear compression garments while exercising?
Yes
Define prosopagnosia
Difficulty recognizing faces
Due to damage to the visual association area in the occipital lobe
Problems completing bimanual tasks may be indicative of what type of stroke?
ACA due to damage to the corpus callosum
Describe the WB precautions for an OATS procedure
Femoral condyle
Patellar repair
Femoral condyle: FWB allowed at 8-12 wks post-surgery
Patella: FWB allowed at 4 wks post-surgery
Describe what is done during on osteochondral autograft & allograft procedure
Articular cartilage and bone are transplanted from either a cadaveric donor (allograft) or from the patient (autograft)
