61 LLevar Many Uses Flashcards
The Spanish verb llevar used to mean primarily to carry a heavy burden. However, it has become one of the most flexible verbs in the language, used not only in discussing what a person carries,
but also what a person wears, has, does, tolerates, or moves. As a result, it isnโt easy to tell what llevar means out of context.

One of the most common uses of llevar is as the equivalent of โto wearโ clothing or accessories.
It can also refer to wearing or sporting a type of style, such as tattoos or a type of hairdo.
Normally, if a person is wearing a type of item of which he or she would wear or use only one at a time, the indefinite article (un or una, the equivalent of โaโ or โanโ) is not used. Often the definite article (el or la (the equivalent of โtheโ) can be used instead.
In other words, Spanish doesnโt say the equivalent of โI am wearing a dressโ but often โI am wearing the dress.โ If the identity of the item is important, such as if the sentence identifies the itemโs color, an indefinite article is retained.
It isnโt necessary to wear your hat.
No es necesario llevar el sombrero.
Donโt forget to cover up your neck and wear a long-sleeved shirt.

Spanish has several ways of describing how long an event or activity occurs. Although we often us โforโ in English for length or duration of timeโsuch as in โI have worked for a yearโโthe typical ways of translating โforโ often donโt apply.
Which way you use (in using time periods in Spanish) depends partly on whether the activity is still in progress, and in some cases on whether youโre talking about a long or short time period.
The most common way of describing the length of time of an activity in progress is using the verb llevar.
Note the use of the present tense in these examples even though the English uses a present perfect or present perfect progressive verb.

For the โactivityโ part of the above youโll need to use the Spanish verb in the โgerundโ form (which is nothing more than a fancy way to say the โ-ingโ version of it e.g. โeatingโ, โcryingโ, โsleepingโ, โbelievingโ etc).
In Spanish, this means those actions which end in -ando, -iendo or โ-yendo. So, taking the examples above, the gerund would be comiendo, llorando, durmiendo, or creyendo.
