35 14th Subjunctive: PLUPERFECT "HAD" Flashcards
The Pluperfect Subjunctive (also referred to as Past Perfect Subjunctive) refers to action in the time frame of the Pluperfect (Mary had spoken) and in a situation that requires the Subjunctive “I hoped Mary had spoken” (before she left).
With an understanding of the general time frameof the pluperfect - completed action before another another action had occurred - and the situations in which the Subjunctive is used, you will know when to use the Subjunctive.
PLUPERFECT INDICATIVE
Yo sabía que Maria había hablado
I knew that Mary had spoken
PLUPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
Yo esperaba que Maria hubiera hablado.
I hoped that Mary had spoken.
The pluperfect is a compound tense which means that an auxilliary verb required before the main verb.
El pluperfecto es un tiempo compuesto, lo que significa que se requiere un verbo auxiliar antes del verbo principal.
The auxilliary verb HABER is conjugated in the Imperfect subjunctive and is followed by the past participle of the main verb.
El verbo auxiliar HABER se conjuga en el subjuntivo imperfecto y es seguido por el participio pasado del verbo principal.
USE OF THE PLUPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
Main Clause in the past
USE OF THE PLUPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
with a subordinate clause in the Pluperfect Subjunctive.
When the main clause is in the past (either Preterite or Imperfect) and refers to an action - that only possibly had taken place - and the main clause requires the use of the Subjunctive,
the Subordinate clause will be in the Pluperfect Subjunctive.

Was it possible that I had done such a thing?

He acted as if we had met before.
Él actuó como si nos hubiéramos conocido antes.
I hoped that you had won.
Esperaba que hubieras ganado.
Ella dudaba que todos ustedes hubierais leído la tarea.
She doubted that you all had read the assignment.
There wasnt anyone who had listened.
No había nadie que hubiera escuchado.
It was terrible that they hadn’t paid the bill.

I was not sure that the students had heard me

John hoped that the students had studied the lesson.
