4.5 Boards as high-performing teams Flashcards
Boards can be described as a “group”. Define a group.
Two or more people who interact with one another, share similar characteristics and collectively have a sense of unity.
What is the difference between a group and a team?
A group is a collection of individuals with similar characteristics who interact. A team is a group that works together for a collective goal.
Why do some consider that boards can exist as a group but not a team?
Teams work together, and (unitary) boards are always working against each other due to the executive / non-executive divide.
Give Katzenback & Smith’s definition of a “team”,
A small group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.
In “Leadership Team Coaching”, Peter Hawkins identifies 9 factors disinguishing groups from teams:

Explain his “Working together” factor.

In “Leadership Team Coaching”, Peter Hawkins identifies 9 factors disinguishing working groups from teams.
Explain his “Working boundaries” factor.
A working group will only exist when its members are together, while a team continues to exist when they are not together.
In “Leadership Team Coaching”, Peter Hawkins identifies 9 factors disinguishing working groups from teams.
Explain his “Board focus” factor.
A working group is task-focussed, while a team is both task- and learning-focussed.
Salas et al (2006) define a high-performing team as:
