4.2 f Flashcards
define composite material
made from 2 or more materials w hugely different properties that, when combined, create a new material with new characteristics
why is an alloy not a composite
in an alloy the diff materials are mixed, and they become one. composite – materials are just fixed together, keeping their original properties
epoxy (thermoset plastic) is used often to hold together the materials
yea
composite forms
fibre – long strands embedded in matrix
sheet – layers of material bonded together
particle – small particles mixed into matrix
matrix
the “glue” that binds particles and fibres together. typically a liquid that becomes hardened through a chemical reaction
composite processes
weaving – fibres interlaced to create a fabric that can be combined w matrix material
moulding – composite materials are shaped into desired form using a mould
pultrusion – fibres are pulled through a heated die, which shapes the material into long, straight parts
lamination – layering sheets with a matrix in-between each one
examples of common composites
concrete
plywood
fibre glass (plastic and fine fibres of glass)
composite materials adv
much stronger
highly resistant to chemicals, will never rust
composite materials disadv
cant be recycled
very expensive
air bubbles in matrix will cause weak spots
