2.6 Flashcards
eco design
a strategy that focuses on 3 environmental categories – materials, E, pollution/waste
more comprehensive than green design as its aim is to be applied to all 3 categories
-can often be incremental, like starting w special product lines for a test run
-more manageable bcs develop new processes, work out the bugs etc
whats better eco or green design
eco bcs its aim is to be applied to all 3 categories
life cycle analysis
tool for analysing environmental impact of a design over course of its manufacture, use and disposal. used to help designers understand the impact of their designs
5 stages of product life cycle
1 pre production – getting the resources, transporting material
2 production – processing of resources to make product
3 distribution
4 utilisation – products use, its effect on the environment
5 disposal
what has the highest impact on environment etc at all the stages in the LC
energy consumption
LCA strategies
cradle to cradle
cradle to grave
cradle to gate
cradle to cradle
considers entire lifecycle of the product, aims to eliminate waste from the lifecycle (product is kept in the cycle, most often returned back to company)
cradle to grave
considers impacts at each stage of lifecycle, but they dont care what happens to the product at the end (becomes waste)
cradle to gate
measures products footprint up to point where it leaves factory gate => doesnt include footprint when used by consumers etc
circular economy
system where materials never become waste. products + materials are kept in the cycle through maintenance, reuse, recycling etc
possible environmental considerations within an LCA
pollution
water degradation
air contamination
noise
E consumption
product cycle
cycle every product goes through from introduction to withdrawal
role of designer, manufacturer, user
1 designer – responsible for pre production, has a role in production. has control of products future through its design
2 manufacturer – selection of manufacturing techniques, quality control, can minimise E usage, emissions etc
3 user – spending patterns – prefer more durable products, buying power – force 1 and 2 to be more green, disposal of product
design for environment
approach to reduce overall environmental impact of a product
converging technology
synergistic merging of nanotech, biotech, information tech and cognitive science
