2.1 Flashcards
renewable resource
natural resource that cna replenish w time or doesnt go away at all
4 types of renewable resources
1) solar – converts sunlight into E
2) wind power – large blades of wind turbines rotate when blown by wind, E of wind -> electricity
3) tidal energy – exploits rise and fall of sea level
4) biomass – energy from burning plants
renewable sources advantages
less pollution
cheap once set up
eco friendly
renewable sources disadvantages
expensive to set up
not always efficient
many thing theyre ugly
takes up a lot of space
renewability
resource that is inexhaustible therefore can be renewed quickly
non renewable
natural resource that doesnt replenish at sustainable rate
3 types of non renewable resources
1 coal – mostly for home heating + running power plants
2 oil – for stuff like plastic, jet fuel…
3 natural gases – home heating, has ovens, grills
reserves
natural resource thats been identified in terms of quantity + quality; resources that can be extracted. there are also reserves that exist but we cant extract them yet (bcs technology/economy)
6 considerations in terms of resource management in an area
1 set up cost
2 efficiency of conversion – is output worth input??
3 sustainable + constant supply
4 social impact – can bring jobs but also corruption, human rights abuse
5 environmental impact
6 decomissioning – expensive to withdraw equipment etc
