Once considered a tuberculoid reaction, is currently regarded as an idiopathic lichenoid tissue reaction
Lichen nitidus
Can help distinguish palmar lichen nitidus from lichen planus
Minute keratotic spicules, or central plugs, on the central, palmar surfaces
Classic histopathologic description of lichen nitidus
“Ball and claw” pattern with involvement of up to three dermal papillae
Lichen nitidus prognosis
Eventually resolves within 1 year
May be associated with a more chronic course of lichen nitidus
Palmoplantar disease
First-line topical treatments for lichen nitidus
Mid- to high-potency topical corticosteroids
First-line systemic agents in cases of pruritus in lichen nitidus
Antihistamines
Up to 60% of individuals have a personal or family history of atopy
Lichen striatus
Lichen striatus prognosis
Self-limited with a mean duration of approximately 6 to 12 months
