Q

What is tandem feeding

A

when a mother breastfeeds an infant and her toddler

chooses to breastfeed both the
infant and toddler (tandem feeding). There are many benefits to
breastfeeding toddlers who have a wide range of foods in their
diet. Breastfeeding continues to provide immunity, strengthens
the maternal-child bond, is a source of comfort to the child, and
is readily available when the child needs quick nourishment and
none other is available. Breastfeeding the toddler may reduce the
prevalence of obesity in children

22
Q

What is the only indication to exclude food from a mothers diet while breastfeeding

A

only if it bothers infant

23
Q

Does eliminating foods help with colic

A

no- very little evidence but they can try

For infants with colic, mothers may wish to reduce or eliminate
allergenic foods (e.g., cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy,
fish, and wheat) in her diet; however, there is little evidence that
elimination of foods is protective against colic symptoms.

24
Q

Can breastmilk pass alcohol to baby

A

yes- can take 2-3 hours for alcohol to be elmininated

Breastfeeding should occur when the mother is feeling neurologically normal

25
Q

Does moderate caffeine intake cause concern for the infant while breastfeeding

A

Moderate intake of caffeine (1 to 2 cups of coffee per day) will not cause concerns for the infant.

Excessive caffeine consumption should be avoided until the infant is able to
metabolize caffeine, which occurs at approximately 2 to 4 months
of age

26
Q

If thawing breast milk that is frozen how should it be thawed

A

in warm water- do not use microwave because it heats unevenly and can burn the infant
