3.2 Nutrition- breastfeeding part 2 Flashcards

Q

What test can be done to detect inverted nipples

A

pinch test

Type of nipples—everted, flat, or inverted. It is not always possible to detect an inverted nipple by observation only.
The “pinch test” may be needed to identify nipples that invert with tactile stimulation to the areola.

To do the pinch test, place the thumb and forefinger on opposite sides of the areola approximately 1 to 1.5 inches back from the nipple-areolar junction.
Gently compress as though bringing the two fingers together, causing the nipple to become more everted or inverted.

This assessment should be conducted prenatally on every patient

Q

Which breastfeeding position is less likely to stimulate the startle (Moro) reflex and support innate feeding reflexes

A

physiologic laid-back position

In the laid-back position, the mother reclines in a position that supports her back and neck and brings her baby to her chest and allows the baby to rest its cheek against her breast.

The baby is able to use the rooting and sucking reflexes to find the nipple, and the mother can support her breast to help guide the baby.

When the baby has latched, gravity helps to maintain a deeper latch and the mother is able to relax and enjoy the breastfeeding session

Q

When is the ideal first feeding of a newborn

A

30-60 mins after birth

This first feeding should take place in the delivery area with encouragement by all in attendance. It will not delay, to any significant extent, any procedures required, such as weighing and measuring the infant, instilling ointment or drops in the infant’s eyes, and giving a vitamin K injection.

These procedures can be done while the baby remains on the mother’s abdomen.
The mother and infant should remain together as much as possible, with rooming-in preferable.

Q

FYI Mothers who need to pump should pump at normal feedings times to stimulate suckling and keep production

Instruct the mother to save even the smallest amounts of colostrum to give to her infant.
