What is Bacterial Plaque? Flashcards
What is bacterial plaque?
Colonies of specific microbes surrounded by a gel-like intercellular substance
What is bacterial plaque derived from?
- Bacteria themselves
- Saliva
- Crevicular fluid (inflammatory exudate)
What is the function of the plaque matrix?
Pathway for the movement of bacteria and fluids
What two sources are the contents of the plaque matrix derived from?
- Products of bacterial metabolism
2. Saliva products
What are the products of bacterial metabolism?
- acids
- enzymes
- toxins
What are the saliva products?
- carbohydrates
- proteins
- salts
- food components
- leukocytes
- epithelial cells
Describe the first step in method of formation
- Pellicle/cuticle near gingiva, glycoprotein or agglutinating substance
Describe the second step in method of formation
Attachment occurs as bacteria colonize, liberating dextram which anchors the cariogenic mass to the tooth
What does dextram do?
Anchor the cariogenic mass to the tooth
Describe the third step in method of formation
Soft matrix becomes calculus as calcium and phosphate in the saliva mineralize the bacteria in the deeper layers
Describe the fourth step in method of formation
Produce combination of cariogenic and periodontal problems at this stage
