TMJ (p. 293) Flashcards
What is the TMJ?
Temporomandibular joint. Articulation between the temporal bone and the mandible.
How is the TMJ formed?
Mandibular condyle fits into the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone.
What is the articular disc?
A small fibrous pad of dense collagen tissue. Devoid of any blood vessels or nerve fibers.
Where is the articular disc found?
Between the mandibular condyle and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone.
What is the function of the articular disc?
Nonossified bone that permits the complex movement of this joint
What kind of joint is the TMJ?
Bilateral synovial joint
What are the articulating surfaces of the TMJ?
Temporal bone and mandible
The TMJ is actually…
Two joints that function as one.
Where is the mandible fused? Why?
At the midline, so the left and right joints are interrelated in their movements
What are the parts that make up the mandible?
3 bony parts:
- Mandibular/glenoid fossa
- Condyloid process
- Articular eminence
