Nerves 2 Flashcards
Describe the distribution of the anterior superior alveolar nerve
Extends down, ant to the wall of the sinus
What does the anterior superior alveolar nerve innervate?
Maxillary anterior teeth
Describe the distribution of the middle superior alveolar nerve
Lies in the wall of the sinus
What does the middle superior alveolar nerve innervate?
The premolars, and usually the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary first molar
What does the posterior superior alveolar nerve innervate
- Maxillary buccal gingiva of the premolars and molars
- Enters the bone to supply the second and third maxillary molars and
- Usually the distobuccal and lingual roots of the maxillary first molar
- Part of the maxillary sinus ** (sinus problems can affect teeth)
Describe the distribution of the pterygopalatine (sphenopalatine) nerve
- Comes off the maxillary division
- Leaves the nasal cavity through the incisive foramen as the nasopalatine nerve in the anterior palate
What does the pterygopalatine (sphenopalatine) nerve innervate?
- Nasal cavity
- Lingual gingiva adjacent to the max. central and lateral incisor

Sphenopalatine

Pterygopalatine
Describe the distribution of the descending palatine nerve
Runs off the maxillary division, downward to the posterior part of the hard palate. Separates into two branches.
What are the two branches of the descending palatine nerve?
Lesser palatine nerve, greater palatine nerve
Which nerve branches into the lesser palatine nerve and greater palatine nerve?
The descending palatine nerve
Which nerve supplies the skin of the nose, lower eyelid, skin and mucosa of the upper lip, as well as the maxillary labial gingiva?
Infraorbital nerve
What does the infraorbital nerve innervate?
Skin of the nose, lower eyelid, skin/mucosa of the upper lip, maxillary labial gingiva
What nerve sends two branches downward to supply the rest of the maxillary teeth?
Infraorbital nerve
