Attachment Apparatus cont. Again Flashcards
What is the cribriform plate?
The bone that forms the wall of the tooth
What type of bone is the cribriform plate?
Spongy or cancellous. Blood vessels pass through the numerous holes.
Cribriform plate, aka
- Alveolar bone proper
- Lamina dura (radiographically)
What is the alveolar crest?
The point at which the cribriform plate fuses with the cortical plate on the facial and lingual sides of the crest of the alveolar process (radiographically, “interproximal alveolar crest of bone”).
What do the contours of the interproximal alveolar crest of bone indicate?
Periodontal health
What is the periodontal ligament?
A ligament specially adapted to support the tooth in its bony socket
What is the role of the periodontal ligament?
To withstand the pressure and forces of mastication
How does the periodontal ligament appear on a radiograph?
Translucent
What is the periodontal ligament continuous with?
The connective tissue of the gingiva!
The periodontal ligament surrounds…. and connects….
Surrounds the root of the tooth and connects the root of the tooth with the bone of the socket wall
What are Sharpey’s fibers?
Ends of the periodontal ligament
Where are Sharpey’s fibers located?
In the cementum of the root of the tooth and in the alveolar bone
