Root and Cementum Tissue Structure Flashcards
What determines the length of the root?
Growth of the epithelial root sheath
What determines the number of roots?
Growth of the epithelial diaphragm
Growth of epithelial diaphragm circumference:
- If it grows evenly: one root
- If two areas grow more rapidly: two roots
- If three areas grow more rapidly: three roots.
Color and texture of cementum?
Yellowish
Hard
What type of tissue is cementum?
Mineralized tissue
Where is cementum found?
Covering the roots, beginning at the CEJ
Composition of cementum?
45-50% inorganic, 50-55% organic and water
What attaches cemtum to gingiva?
Periodontal fibers
What are the hook-like ends of periodontal fibers called?
Sharpy’s Fibers
What are the two types of cementum?
Cellular and acellular
What is cellular cementum?
Where is it found?
- Cementum where cells are trapped
- Apical 1/3 of root
What is acellular cementum?
Where is it located?
- Cementum where no cells are trapped
- Located on cervical 2/3 of root
What does cementum do?
Provide a medium to which fibers can attach and bind the tooth to alveolar bone
