Attachment Apparatus cont. Flashcards
What does cementum cover?
Surface of the root of the tooth
What does cementum do?
Provides a medium for the attachment of periodontal ligaments
What is the alveolar process?
The extension of bone from the body of the mandible and the maxilla
What does the alveolar process do?
Support the teeth in their functional positions in the jaw
Relationship between alveolar process and developing teeth?
The stimulus for the production of the alveolar process is the developing teeth
Central portion of alveolar process?
Made of spongy bone
Alveolar socket
(alveolus)
the cavity within the alveolar process in which the root of the tooth is held
Interdental septum
Bony projection that separates one socket from another
Interradicular septum
Bone that separates the roots of a multi-rooted tooth
What is alveolar bone?
The bone of the maxillary and mandibular jaw that makes up the sockts for the teeth
Composition of alveolar bone?
65% inorganic crystal and 35% organic, collagen, and non-collagenous fibers
3 layers of alveolar bone
- cortical plate
- cribiform plate
- spongy bone
What is the cortical plate?
A site for skeletal muscles
What does the cortical plate cover
The alveolar process
What is the job of the cortical plate?
Provide strength and protection
