TMJ (p. 293) pt. 2 Flashcards
What is the mandibular fossa? Where is it found?
An oval depression in the temporal bone, just anterior to the external auditory meatus
Mandibular fossa, aka
Glenoid fossa
What is the condyloid process? Where is it found?
Extension of mandible that lies in the glenoid fossa
What is the articular eminence? Where is it found?
Raised portion of the temporal bone just anterior to the glenoid fossa
What is the articular disc?
A small, fibrous pad of dense collagen tissue
What does the articular disc separate?
The articular space between the glenoid fossa and the condyle into upper and lower compartments
Glenoid fossa, aka
Mandibular fossa
Describe the upper surface of the articular disc
Concavo-convex to match the contours of the mandibular fossa and the articular eminence
Describe the lower surface of the articular disc
Concave to match the contour of the condyle
Describe the posterior band
Thicker posterior end of the articular disc
What is the intermediate zone of the articular disc?
The thinnest part, found in the middle
Describe the anterior end of the articular disc
Called the anterior band, thickens slightly towards the middle
What are the regions above and below the articular disc?
Synovial cavities
Describe the tissue in synovial cavities
Secrete synovial fluid for lubrication
Fibers from the _____ _____ muscle insert into the disc
lateral pterygoid
