e.g. rape is not about sex, it’s about power and control
what’s the difference between uttering threats and outright sexual assault?
uttering threats is putting pressure on a person to have sex;
sexual assault is about using force without consent
what’re the different levels of sexual assault?
level 1: sexual assault;
level 2: with a weapon;
level 3: aggravated, which wounds/endangers life;
statutory rape: sex with a minor <14 years
what three things do you need to prove in court for sexual assault?
occurrence;
identity;
consent
what are some teen behaviour indicators of have been raped?
antisocial behaviour;
truancy, running away;
eating disorders;
pregnancy, STDs;
depression, self abuse, suicide;
promiscuity, prostitution
what does SCAN stand for?

note: don’t ask why questions in a teen rape history-taking session
say “I’m sorry this happened” and reinforce that it wasn’t their fault
note: ask rape patients to come back in 24 hours. They’re in shock and won’t remember what you’ve said

what are symptoms of the acute phase (disorganization) of rape trauma syndrome?
fear, anxiety, anger;
can be outwardly composed;
somatic symptoms are skeletal muscle tension, GI irritability, GU disturbance
what are symptoms of the long term phase (reorganization) of rape trauma syndrome?
difficulty with relationships;
increased dependence;
disruption and change in lifestyle;
anger towards offender/legal system/everything;
sexual dysfunction
what are some symptoms of PTSD?
recognisable stressor;
re-experiencing the trauma;
avoidance;
persistent negative alteration in cognition and mood;
alterations in arousal
how long do the symptoms have to exist for before diagnosing PTSD?
