define child abuse
physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust, or power
what percentage of adults report a history of severe physical abuse?
20%
what percentage of adults report a history of sexual abuse?
22% of women, 8% of men
what are the red flags of bruises?
age: bruises in non ambulating children are unusual;
location: bruises in well-cushioned areas are less common;
pattern: object outlines
who makes the call to CAS?
anyone who has the reasonable grounds to suspect the issues must report by law. They cannot delegate the responsibility to someone else to make the call. If this person has additional grounds, they have to submit additional reports
what’s the medical evaluation of possible physical abuse?
check underlying medical conditions;
check lab tests for occult abdo injury;
skeletal survey;
brain imaging;
ophthalmology exam (e.g. for retinal hemorrhages)
