what are the 3 growth parameters of newborns?
weight,
head circumference,
length
what percentile of growth is considered abnormal?
95 (small/large for gestational age)
note: it’s normal to lose up to 10% of birth weight
most regain it in 10-14 days
average weight gain is how much?
20-30g/day. Double weight by 4 months and triple by 1 year
what’s the lower limit of head size?
<32 cm at birth is cause for concern
what’s caput succeedaneum?
pitting edema in the head. Swelling due to delivery
what’s a cephalohematoma?
blood clot under the periosteum of skull. Takes weeks to resolve. Doesn’t cross suture lines
what’s a subgaleal hemorrhage?
bleeding above the periosteum. Can cross suture lines. Concerned for blood loss
note: check the hips for breech babies to see if dysplasias
ok
what’s acrocyanosis?
bluish colour of extremities. Normal and takes a few hours to become pink. O2 sat is normal
define preterm baby
baby born < 37 weeks GA
how to classify preterm infants?
low, very low, extremely low birthrates (<1000 g)
note: ELBW infants account for 0.8% of births but 55% of infant deaths

patent ductus arteriosus

immature skin;

immature immune system;

what are some GI acute morbidities of the preterm infant?
feeding intolerance;
necrotizing enterocolitis
what are some neurological acute morbidities of the preterm infant?
perinatal asphyxia;
IVH;
periventricular leucomalacia
