Femoral Artery
a cont. of ext. iliac A.
It enter fem.triangle and passes down w. fem vein+nerve
-In fem.triangle it gives off:
a) br for cut. reg of lower abdomen
b) br for ext. genital organs
c) br for the thigh
A) br for cut.reg of lower abdomen
-Spf epigastric A; supplies lower p. abd.wall
-Spf circumflex iliac A: supplies ant. abd.wall over inguinal ligg.
B) br for ext.genital organs
-External pudendal aa (scrotal/labial br)
C) br for thigh
-Deep artery of thigh(profunda femoris artery):
Originates from lateral side of fem.A in fem.triangle. It gives off—>
1)medial circumflex femoral A: for hip + med/post fem mm.
2)lateral circumflex fem.A: for ant fem mm, tensor fascia lata
og head/neck of femur
3)perforating aa: Terminal branches of deep artery of thigh.
For post. fem muscles.
Femoral artery áfram
After leaving fem.triangle, it cont. down the thigh in the–>
adductor canal. *Accompanying femoral vein + saphenous N
-It gives off descending genicular A (for knee joint, anastomoses w aa around knee joint)
-Svo leaves adductor canal thru adductor hiatus og verður að
—> Popliteal artery

—> Popliteal artery
Popliteal Artery
a cont. of femoral A.
-it enters popliteal fossa and desc. there w tibial N
(it’s the deepest of the neurovascular structures in the p. fossa)
-Gives off br for knee joint;
superior, middle + inferior genicular aa
-Gives of br for leg:
Sural aa: supply Gastrocnemius mm, soleus, plantaris og skin of leg
*Popliteal A–>
a) anterior tibial A…… b) posterior tibial A
Posterior tibial A
-accompanies Tibial N
-gives br for dorsal og lateral leg::
a) circumflex fibular A: anastomoses w vessels surr. the knee
b) muscular branches; supply posterior crural mm
c) fibular(peroneal) A; supply lateral crural mm
*post. tibial A, enters foot thru medial retromalleolar canal
–> divides into medial og lateral Plantar aa.
Posterior tibial A
-accompanies Tibial N
-gives br for dorsal og lateral leg::
a) circumflex fibular A: anastomoses w vessels surr. the knee
b) muscular branches; supply posterior crural mm
c) fibular(peroneal) A; supply lateral crural mm
*post. tibial A, enters foot thru medial retromalleolar canal
–> divides into medial og lateral Plantar aa.
Medial og lateral plantar aa (of Tibial A)
1)Medial plantar A
2)Lateral plantar A—>deep plantar arch
—> plantar metatarsal A —> digital branches
*aa accompany branches of Tibial N
Anterior tibial A
-penetrates inteross.membr
-supplies anterior crural muscles
-accompanies deep fibular(peroneal) N
-It gives off anterior medial malleolar A
og anterior lateral malleolar A
*Ant tibial A –> becomes Dorsalis pedis A. sem gives off–>
Tarsal aa (medial+lateral br)
Dorsalis pedis —> Arcuate A. sem gives off—>
Dorsal metatarsal aa —>Dorsal digital aa.
Superficial veins lower limbs
-Large veins. embedded in the spf (subcutaneous) fascia
-Drain skin + subq tissues
-Begin as Dorsal venous arch on back of foot
-They drain by perforating veins to the deep veins
-Often become distended (varicose veins)
-Can be used for vascular transplantation
Gr. saphenous vein (spf vein)
-O from medial side dorsal venous arch in foot
-asc. anterior to medial malleolus, acc. by saphenous N
-passes up medial side leg, knee and ant. thigh reg
-At anterior thigh, superiorly–>
it receives:
a) ext. pudendal veins (blood from ext genital organs)
b) spf epigastric vein (blood from adj. p of abd. wall)
c) spf circumflx iliac vein (blood from abd.wall over inguinal lig)
d) Receives blood from ant+medial leg
og ant+post thigh
-It passes thru saphenous opening (opening in deep fascia, covering the fem.triangle)
-It terminates in femoral vein

Small saphenous vein, spf vein
-O from lateral side of dorsal venous arch on foot
-asc behind the lateral malleolus and passes up back of the leg
-acc by Sural N
-receives blood from lateral + posterior crural regions
-penetrates deep fascia superior
-joins Popliteal vein, posterior to the knee
