Venous Return Flashcards
Venous return is made of 5 components:
Skeletal pump Smooth muscle Pocket valves Respiratory pump Gravity
Skeletal pump:
Muscles surround the veins expand and contract, pressing on veins and causing a pumping effect
Particularly important during exercise
Active cool down vital
Smooth muscle:
Work with voluntary muscles to help squeeze the blood back to the heart
Pocket valves:
Stop blood in veins return back to where it came from
Flow one way to the heart
Respiratory pump:
Increase in breathing rate and depth (tidal volume) from exercise, change the pressure within the thorax and abdomen (thoracic cavity)
Breathing in - increased pressure compresses the veins and squeezes the blood in to the veins that supply the heart
Gravity:
Assists the flow of blood from above the heart
Need to move around as it hinders lower body
