Social/Observational Flashcards
Most commonly applied when we are considering how we…
Acquire attitudes and behaviours that are displayed by elite performers
Based upon the concept that we learn by…
Copying or mimicking others
Much of out understanding of how observation of others can help us to learn and acquire skills stems from the work by…
Bandura
Bandura focused on how we…
Require general behaviour rather than acquire skills, but his research allows is to see a range of factors that affect how we learn from observing others
Bandura’s experiment consisted of:
Placing a child and adult in a room
Adult attacked Bobo doll, child copied
Then shows an adult dressed as a cat (imitates cartoons) aggressive behaviour child watched
Child reacted the same
What did Bandura’s experiment show?
Influenced by adults (older), same sex and who we respect
How can it be applied to sport?
Demonstrations
Demos help by..:
Adults, same sex and who we respect (coach) wish learner to copy/model their whack our in the demonstration (modelling)
In order for a demo to be effective:
Characteristics of a model
Physical and psychological readiness of the learner
Motivation of the learner
Four stages:
Attention-performer must watch demo
Retention-visual model must be retained
Motor reproduction-learner just have reached a stage of sufficient physical development so that they can actually perform the skill
Motivation-the learner will not perform the skill unless they are motivated (extrinsic rewards may help)
What makes a demo successful?
The coach/teacher must make sure the characteristics of the model and situation are appropriate
Successful demo determined by:
Relevance to performer (existing skill level of learner & demo)
Accuracy or demo (if learner views a flawed model they may acquire a faulty technique)
The status of the role model
