When should command be used:
Cognitive stage
When should reciprocal be used:
End of cognitive
Beginning of associative
When should guided discovery be used:
Associative and autonomous stage
When should problem solving be used:
Autonomous stage
Advantages of command:
- Teacher limited and lacks confidence this allows them to retain full control of the session
- Avoid having to answer awkward questions and retain confidence in themselves - reduce element of risk
- Students grasp basics
Advantages of reciprocal:
- More thorough understanding of the objective
- Can help hen learning situation is poor
- Large group with limited facilities, observe, can help teacher
- Improve communication
- Gain confidence and listening skills
Advantages of guided discovery:
- Much deeper understanding of what is to be achieved
- Range of possible outcomes or where the application of a skill or movement requires decision making and judgement
- Progression of the skill or sequence clear
Advantages of problem solving:
- Develop understanding, why we do it before we do it
- Each learner can find their own solution
- Greater understanding of the problem and how it may be solved
- Is a far more ‘cognitive approach’
What are the disadvantages of command:
- Doesn’t allow development of understanding
- Restriction development
- Prevent learners from taking responsibility for their own learning
- Not encouraged to think
What are the disadvantages of reciprocal:
- May be difficult with beginners
- Learners may lack communication skills to be effective
- Learners may not be able to analyse movement and therefore provide incorrect feedback
- Difficulty in monitoring large groups to ensure they are all on-task
- Sheets could teach wrong technique if portrayed wrong
- Lack motivation = less observation of feedback role
- Immature = mislead partner/difficult to receive criticism
What are the disadvantages of guided discovery:
-Time-consuming
-Difficult with beginners or those who lack creativity (confusing)
-Limited development if learners have poor communication skills
-Progress of large groups is difficult to monitor
-Learning is not uniform with all learners
-Element of risk
-Less effective with highly complex
Skill
Disadvantage of problem solving:
-Determined by learners skill level
