Plane:
An imaginary flat surface through the body
Axis of rotation:
An imaginary line about which the body rotates or spins at right angles
Frontal plane
Divides front & back
Sagittal axis (horizontally front to back)
Rotate about the SA, abduction/adduction
Sporting examples: cartwheel, side flexion trunk bends & star jumps
Sagittal plane
Divides left & right
Rotates about the TRANSVERSE axis (through hip) enables FLEXION/EXTENSION
Sporting examples; piked/tucked somersaults, take-off at pole vault, bicep curl, sprinting
Transverse plane
Divides top & bottom
Rotates about the LONGITUDINAL axis e.g. Twisting & turning (rotation)
Sporting examples; spinning skater, discus thrower, hammer thrower & turning at skiing
