Variables Affecting Conformity✅ Flashcards
Three variables affecting conformity
Group size
Difficulty of the task
Unanimity of the majority
Group size
Asch found that conformity tends to increase as the group size increases. He specifically found that there was little conformity when the majority consisted of just one or two confederates. However under the pressure of three confederates the proportion of conforming responses jumped to around 30%
Difficulty of the task
Asch found that situational differences are an important factor when determining conformity. He specifically found that under these circumstances the level of conformity increased
Unanimity of the majority
Asch found that breaking the unanimity can be a major factor in reducing conformity levels. He specifically found that when the real participants were given the support of either a participant or confederate who had been instructed to give the right answers conformity levels dropped reducing the percentage of wrong answers from 33% to just5%
Disadvantage of aschs study
Lab experiment so lacks ecological validity
