Normative social influence
When we conform to fit in with the group because we wish to gain approval of others and don’t want to look silly
An example of normative
Buying clothes that are popular and trendy to fit in with a group even tho u may not like them but u want to be approved
Type of conformity that’s likely to occur due to normative social influence
Compliance.
As it’s when a person accepts influence as they want to fit in and achieve a favourable reaction
Informational social influence
The desire to be right, when we conform because we are unsure of the answer we look to others for guidance who may have more information
Example of informational social influence
Copying someone in class because you’re unsure of the answer
Type of conformity that’s most likely to occur due to informational social inflejxne
Internalisation.
Because you change your opinion permanently as you’re unsure so go along with others
Who supports normative social influence
Asch
As asch conducted the line judgement task that people conform to fit into a group so they can be approved
But it’s a lab experiment and lack ecological validity and population validity so may not be totally valid
Who supports informational social influence
Sherif.
Concluded in his study that a person who is unsure of the answer will look to Others for guidance
But it’s a lab experiment so lacks ecological and population validity so may not be totally valid
