Animal Studies Of Attachment✅ Flashcards
Harlows monkeys aim
To study the mechanism by which new born monkeys attach with their mothers
Procedure of harlows monkeys
Some monkeys were in isolation, some died, others were frightened and behaved abnormally they could not interact with other monkeys when they were older
Some were put with surrogate mothers, one made of wire with milk the other was cloth for comfort
Findings of harlows monkeys
Both groups spent more time with the cloth monkey for comfort and only went to wire monkey for food. If a frightening object was placed in the cage they would go straight to cloth mother
Conclusion of harlows monkeys
For a monkey to develop normally they must have some interaction with an object they can go to for comfort during the critical period
Advantages of harlows monkeys
Valuable insight into the development of attachment and social behaviour, it provided a lot of info as at the time there was a strong belief attachment was related to physical care like food instead of emotional
Can be vital in convincing people about importance of emotional care in hospitals etc as it shows when babies are born they should have contact straight away to help promote development of emotional tie
Disadvantages of harlows monkeys
Unethical and unnecessarily cruel, as if was clear the monkeys suffered emotional and psychological harm. Some even died. Also Harlow created a state of anxiety in female monkeys which had an impact when they become parents. Some monkeys killed their children
Lorenz’s geese aim
To study imprinting
Lorenz’s geese procedure
Split a large group of goose eggs into two groups one was allowed to hatch normally and followed their mothers the second was incubated and arranged so he was the first thing they seen
Lorenz’s geese findings
The incubated geese followed him everywhere they showed no recognition of their real mother. They had formed an imprint of the object they were to follow when they hatched. He found that geese follow the first thing they see when they hatch during a 12-17hour critical period
Lorenz’s geese conclusion
Once imprinting has occurred it can’t be reversed
