Multistore Model Of Memory✅ Flashcards
Consists of
3 stores and 4 processes
What are the 4 processes and the extra one
Stimulus input Attention Maintenance rehearsal Transfer Retrieval
What are the three stores
Sensory register
Stm
Ltm
Stimulus inpur
Where the info is detected
Sensory register
Very large capacity
Duration of milliseconds
Encodes multimodal
Attention
If the persons attention is focused on the info it will be taken to the stm
Stm
Capacity of 7+-2
Duration up to 18 secs
Encodes acoustically
Maintenance rehearsal
If the information is rehearsed/repeated enough it will be remembered such repetition will create a ltm
Transfer
If information is rehearsed enough it will be taken to ltm through the process of transfer
Ltm
Potentially unlimited capacity
Duration of up to a life time
Encodes semantically
Retrieval
The process of getting the information from the Ltm to the stm so it’s available for use
HM
Suffered from epilepsy, in order to treat it he had brain tissue removed which caused his Ltm to be effected but stm left intact. This shows each store is separate
KF
Involved in a motorcycle accident that caused brain damage, he was left unable to process new STM but his ltm was intact. This shows stores are separate
Oversimplified
As it fails to take into account the complexity of the human mind, therefore it may not be able to be used as it may not be effective
Doesn’t take into account flash bulb memory
Multi store model says rehearsal is the only way info can be taken from stm to ltm. But flash bulb memory says when an exciting or traumatic event happens it’s automatically remembered e.g 9/11 so rehearsal may not be necessary
