To investigate the cause of obedient behaviour
Procedure
Participants were 2000 white middle class Americans. Took part in a study who looked at their unconscious attitudes towards racial groups. In order to test this the f-scale was used. Questions included obedience and respect for authority are he lost important virtues a child should learn and rules are there for people to follow not change
Findings
Those who scored high on the f-scale were characterised as showing excessive respect and obedient to those of higher status. They also had strong distinctive opinions about other groups. There was a strong positive correlation between obedience and authoritarian personality
Conclusion
Adorno concluded that people of this personality type are obedient
Advantages
Using questionnaires are less time consuming as they can just give them out and analyse results
Graphs can be used to analyse and collect results
Disadvantages
Lacks population validity as all participants were white middle class Americans can’t generalise
Questionnaires - people may misinterpret what something means some people may lie this means may lack validity

A peronality type who is very obedient to those who have power over them
