Define deviation from ideal mental health
Starts with a definition of normality. If a person doesn’t fulfil the criteria this could indicate an abnormality
Describe deviation from ideal mental health
Rather than defining what is abnormal we define what is normal / ideal. This requires us to decide on the characteristics we consider necessary for positive mental health.

Identified 6 criteria that are necessary for ideal mental health. She suggests that if you pick any of these you may suffer from a mental health disorder

Positive attitudes towards the self, self actualisation of ones potential, resistance to stress, personal autonomy, accurate perception of reality, adapting to the environment

Stressing about exams
Example of failing to adapt to environment is
Moving schools and not making any new friends
A03- most people will be classed as abnormal using this criteria
Based on jahodas principles of what’s normal (bias) strictly applied, so few people actually meet the criteria that the majority of people would be classed as abnormal. For example grief would be viewed as abnormal
