Maternal deprivation
To be deprived is to lose something . In the context of child development deprivation refers to the loss of emotional care that is normally provided by a primary care giver
Bowlby believed that a young child who is denied such care
May become emotionally disturbed
He also believes infants need a warm intimate continuous relationship with their mother to
Maintain normal mental health, if the child is denied such care because of separations they could be effected
How ever it only applies to the critical period in development
Separation will only have an effect if this happens before the age of 2 and a half it there’s no substitute mother available
He also believed there was a continuing risk until the age of 5
Potential damage can be avoided if a suitable emotional care is provided by a sub mother. Bowlby suggested the long term consequences of deprivation was emotional maladjustment even mental health like depression
Advantages of maternal deprivation
Bowlbys 44 juvenile thieves study supports because they suffered early separations therefore they were more likely to commit a crime as bowlby found 86% of affection less thrives suffered frequent separations
Disadvantages of maternal deprivation
Critical period has been criticised by Czech twins, found attachments can develop outside the critical period its likely there’s a period in which attachments should be formed but it’s likely to extend beyond the first 3 year
