Types Of LTM✅ Flashcards
Two types of ltm
Explicit and implicit
Explicit has two types
Semantic and episodic
Implicit has one type
Procedural
Episodic
Type of explicit memory, available for conscious inspection. Is concerned with ‘knowing that’ and is responsible for storing specific, personal events and their context. For example, your 10th birthday
Semantic memory
A type of explicit memory, its available for conscious inspection. It’s concerned with knowing that and is responsible for storing general knowledge about the world e.g Paris is capital of France
Procedural memory
Type of implicit memory, not available for conscious inspection. It’s concerned with knowing how, and responsible for storing procedures of how to do things e.g tying your shoe laces
Distinction between types of ltm has been supported by research using brain scans
Tulving did brain scans and found episodic memory was in the hippocampus, semantic memory was in the temporal lobe and procedural memory was in the cerebellum. This supports the distinction between ltm’s as the brain scans are accurate
Lack of evidence to distinguish between episodic and semantic memory
There’s an overlap between the two types. This may be because there hippocampus is located in a part of the temporal lobe and it’s thought you can’t make a semantic memory without a episodic memory. Therefore there hasn’t been enough evidence to distinguish between them
Case study’s also support
HM and Clive wearing support the distinction. Their procedural and semantic weren’t effected but episodic was, they had difficulty recalling events that had happened. This supports the distinction between types of ltm as if shows the different stores
Episodic memory is found in
The hippocampus
Semantic memory is found in the
Temporal lobe
Procedural memory is found in the
Cerebellum
