Biopsychology-lateralisation&split Brain Flashcards
Lateralisation
The theory that the left and right hemispheres have specialist functions
Functions of the left hemisphere
Controls the right side of the body
Language
Right visual field
Right hemisphere functions
Controls the left side of the body
Spatial tasks
Left visual field
Facial recognition
Sperry
Group of severe epileptics who suffered seizures that couldn’t be controlled by drugs
Shown pictures to the left or right visual field, participants covered one eye and looked at a fixed point on a screen, slides projected on either the right or left side at high speed
If a pic was first shown in the left visual field participants didn’t recognise when it appeared in the right but if appeared in the right visual field patient could describe in speech and writing
Reductionist
Should consider that there are multiple functions in both hemispheres
Sample bias for sperry
Individual differences only 12 people who were used all had severe epilepsy so can’t generalise
Controlled assessments
Lab experiment, controlled artificial environment
Scientifically tested but lacks ecological validity
Plasticity (disadvantage )
Kitten study sewed the kittens eyes on, shows each hemisphere may not have specific function can adapt and change
Which contradicts laterlisation
