V. Properties and Changes of Matter Flashcards
Physical properties:
Properties that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into another substance
Ex. of physical properties?
Density, boiling point, melting point, texture, shape, color
Physical properties are either…?
Extensive properties and Intensive properties
Extensive properties:
depend on the amount of matter that is present.
Ex. of extensive properties?
mass, volume, length
Intensive Properties:
do not depend on the amount of matter present
Ex. of intensive properties?
Density, color, hardness
Chemical properties:
Properties that relate to a substance’s ability to change (reactions) - produce a new substance
Ex. of chemical properties?
Rusting, tarnishing, supports combustion, decomposes when exposed to light, reacts with acids, water, or oxygen
Physical change:
original substance or substances is not chemically changed. original substance is physically altered, but still present.
Ex. of physical changes?
Evaporation, dissolving salt in water, cutting, melting, grinding, folding paper, crushing rocks, evaporation, food coloring in water.
Chemical change (reactions):
Original substance or substances = reactants
New substance or substances formed = products
bonds are broken - atoms are rearranged - new bonds form
Ex. of chemical change?
Burning, rusting, baking, combustion, milk sours, decomposing, tarnishing silver, rotting, neutralizing of an acid
What is not a chemical change?
Change of state & dissolving
