Element classes Flashcards
1
Q
Three classes of elements:
A
Metals, nonmetals, metalloids
2
Q
How are elements arrange?
A
in order of increasing atomic number (# of p+) NOT MASS
3
Q
Elements w/ properties of both metals/ nonmetals are
A
metalloids or semi-conductors
4
Q
Properties of Metals:
A
- lose electrons
- good electrical conductors
- malleable, ductile
- low ionization energy
- low electronegativities
5
Q
Properties of nonmetals:
A
- gain e- (r reduced)
- not conductors
- dull brittle
- high ionization energy
- high electronegativities
6
Q
Periodic Family Groups:
A
Alkali Metals (Group 1)
Alkaline Earth Metals ( Group 2)
Transition Metals (groups 3-12)
+ Inner transition Metals ( f sublevel)
Noble Gases ( Group 18)
Halogens (group 17)
7
Q
(METALS) Alkali Metals - group 1
A
- all have one valence e-
- are NEVER found in pure form in nature (too reactive)
- reactivity INCREASES down the group
- most reactive group of metals
- soft
-silvery in color
8
Q
(METALS) Alkaline Earth Metals- Group 2
A
- all have two valence e-
- less reactive than alkali metals
- not found in pure form in nature (too reactive)
- “Basic”
9
Q
(NONMETALS) Halogens - Group 17
A
- have 17 valence e-
- most reactive nonmetals
- ONLY found in pure form as a diatomic element
10
Q
(NONMETALS) Noble Gases- Group 18
A
- have 8 valence e- (except helium)
- chemically unreactive
- only found in pure form in nature
-colorless and odorless
