Introduction to Bonding Flashcards
Chemical Bonding
attractive force between atoms/ions that binds them together as a unit
Atoms form bonds in order to…
decrease potential energy
increase stability
covalent bonding:
e- are shared between atoms in a molecule or in a polyatomic ion
ionic bonding:
positively/ negatively charged ions are held together by electrostatic forces
e- are transferred
- full charges on resulting ions
Two types of Covalent Bonds:
-polar
-non-polar
Polar covalent:
an unequal attraction for shared e- creating partially charged poles (asymmetrical e- density)
s+ & s-
-partial charges on atoms
Non-polar Covalent:
e- are shared equally: symmetrical e- density
- no charges on atoms
Electronegativity:
the measure of an atom’s ability to attract e-‘s
For Polar Covalent Bonds:
higher electronegative atom=
lower electronegative atom=
= s-
= s+
For Ionic Bonds:
higher electronegative atoms forms…
lower electronegative atom forms…
-anion (gains e-)
-cation (losses e-)
