Types of Reactions (slides) Flashcards
Five types of Chemical Reactions:
-Synthesis
-Decomposition
-Single Replacement
-Double Replacement
-Combustion
Synthesis reaction:
two substances react to form a compound
A + B -> AB
Decomposition Reactions:
a compound produce two simpler substances
AB -> A + B
Decomposition reactions often require:
energy, heat, light, or electricity to occur
Single Replacement Reactions:
one element replaces a similar element in a compound (ions switch places)
A + BC -> AC + B
(Single Replacement Reactions) Cationic:
Metals switch places with other metals or hydrogen
A + BC -> AC + B
(Single Replacement Reactions) Anionic:
nonmetals switch places with other nonmetals
A + BC - BA + C
Double replacement reactions:
ions of 2 compounds in (aq) switch places to form two new compounds (double displacement)
AB + CD -> AD + CB
(Double Replacement) Cations (+ions) always:
come first in an ionic compound
Combustion Reactions:
substances react with oxygen releasing a large amnt of energy
Hydrocarbon + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
(Combustion Reactions) Substances react with oxygen releasing:
large amnt of energy
Combustion Reaction formula:
Hydrocarbon + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
