III.2 Separation Techniques Flashcards
What does separating a mixture use?
the different physical properties of the substance to separate them.
Separation Techniques:
F.E.D.D
Filtration
Evaporation
Distillation
Decanting
Filtration:
Passing a mixture through a filter to separate one substance from another.
USES physical prop of: Size
Distillation:
Separation of liquid mixtures
Liquid with the lowest boiling point will vaporize first
Collect vapor that is then condensed and collected as pure liquid
USES the physical prop of: boiling point
Evaporation:
Ex. Saltwater- water evaporates and leaves salt
USES physical prop of: Vaporization point ( evaporation/boiling)
Decanting:
Separation by pouring off the liquid layer and leaving the solids behind
USES physical prop of: state of matter and Solubility
