Transpiration Rate is Affected by Four Main Things Flashcards
What are the four main things transpiration rate is affected by?
Light intensity
Temperature
Wind speed
Humidity
LI - The brighter the light…
The greater the transpiration rate
LI - What do the stomata do as it gets darker?
They start to close
LI - Why do the stomata close?
Photosynthesis can’t happen in the dark, so they do t need to open to let CO2 in
LI - What can’t escape when the stomata are closed?
Very little water
T - The warmer it is….
The faster transpiration happens
T - what do the water particles have when is warm?
More energy to evaporate and diffuse out of the stomata
WS - The higher the wind speed around a leaf…
The greater the transpiration rate
WS - What happens if the speed around a leaf is low?
The water vapour just surrounds the leaf and doesn’t move away
WS - Why doesn’t diffusion happen as quickly?
There’s a high concentration of water particles outside the leaf as well as inside it
WS - What happens if it’s windy?
The water vapour is swept away, maintains a low concentration of water in the air outside the leaf
H - The drier the air around a leaf…
The faster transpiration happens
H - What happens if the air is humid?
There’s a lot of water in it already, so there’s not much of a difference between the inside and outside of the leaf
H - When does diffusion happen quickest?
If there’s a really high conc in one place, and a really low conc in the other
