Cell Membranes are Pretty Clever Flashcards
How are they clever?
Because they hold the cell together but they stuff in and out as well
How do cells move in and out of cells?
By diffusion, osmosis and active transport
What kind of molecules can diffuse through cell membranes ?
Very small molecules
What are some examples of very small molecules?
Glucose, amino acids, water and oxygen
What can fit through membranes?
Big molecules
What are some examples of big molecules?
Starch and proteins
How is it similar to diffusion in air?
Particles flow through the cell membrane when there’s a higher concentration where there’s a lower concentration
Which ways do they go and why?
Both ways as there only moving about randomly
What happens if there are a lot more particles on one side of the membrane?
There’s a net (overall) movement from that side
